“Man Protect the Green, The Green Do Good to Man.” Sounds like a Chinese proverb, right? Somehow I doubt that it is, as this seems like a cute way of reminding people to keep off the grass! And a mighty nice grass it is!
But I see a trend here. Remember the very first image in my “Say What??” series? It was a similar sign from Vientiane, the Laotian capital, that read “No Passing a Grass.” And as seen in that image, my Australian friend simply couldn’t resist taking it literally by passing a piece of grass!
But this sign comes from the good old People’s Park in Chengdu, the capital of China’s Sichuan Province, famed for it’s spicy style cuisine. And I say “good old,” because every, and I mean every Chinese town has a People’s Park…and a People’s Road. Oh and the currency is called the People’s Currency. See a trend here?
I think that perhaps we should start taking advantage of a gentler way of telling people to keep off the grass. I mean, it’s so forceful. Reminding people that the grass will be good to you if you are good to it seems much kinder…at least to me!
