7 of My Most Awesome Adventures!

If you read a lot of travel blogs, you may have noticed a certain theme spreading through the blogosphere in the past few weeks. It’s the My 7 Links project, which aims to bring bloggers’ best posts to the forefront! I’ve been nominated to participate in the project 3 times (from Our Tasty Travels, Single Occupancy Blog and Butterfly Diary), so, without further ado, let’s take a walk through my archives, shall we?

Most Beautiful Post: Celebrating Life and Travel Heroism

My grandmother was incredibly special to me and a huge influence for me to follow in her worldly footsteps and travel. She passed away in 2008, making sure we all knew her last wish: to have her ashes scattered in Bhutan, a country she had been to and loved and a wish that we fulfilled last year.

One year after that wonderful day that she joined the ashes of Bhutan’s Kings in the Chamkhar River, I was thinking about her a lot. This is a post that came easily to me because it came straight from my heart!

Most Popular Post: The Day I Met the King of Bhutan

Horns Greet the King!

I suppose popularity has different ways of being measured, as you could just turn to analytic data and see what post gets the most hits. But in the blogging world we tend to look at popularity in terms of comments, as it is always great to know that someone out there is actually reading! By this metric, my most popular post is in fact the link I just posted above (Celebrating Life and Travel Heroism)!

But my second most popular is also one of the most offbeat stories I have. The day after we scattered my grandmothers ashes in Bhutan, we were in the little town of Ura, where we just happened to have a brief, one-on-one encounter with the King of Bhutan…

Most Controversial Post: Why Travel Is Not a Vacation

Aaron at Yangshuo

I don’t have any controversial posts, per say, though this one did earn me a bit of beef from some good blogger friends of mine who shall remain nameless, mainly because it was perceived as being critical of the “vacation” lifestyle (cruises, resorts, etc) that I so despise.

This post in fact discusses why I take offense to people asking me how my 3 month “vacation” in Asia was.

Most Helpful Post: The Secret to Ultralight Backpacking

Aaron Hiking to Ping'An

There are volumes of posts out there about how to travel, but the one aspect of this that influenced me the most was my conversion into an ultralight backpacking enthusiast. I’ve since grabbed the proverbial mantel of the ultralight backpacking cause and made it my mission to help those see the light! The best example of this thus far was my single biggest tip on how to shrink the contents of your pack. It might just surprise you…

Post Whose Success Surprised Me: 2010’s Weirdest Travel Experiences

Sorry, We Have No Mints, Please Take a Condom Instead

An awful lot of bloggers do end of the year posts, reviewing their top [insert anything here] of the past year. Given the large quantity of these, I was awfully surprised when my own version on my strangest travel experiences of 2010 got some heavy duty attention! Not that I’m complaining or anything…

Post I Didn’t Feel Got the Attention it Deserved: Adventures in Road Travel: Lao Style

Aaron at Bridge Construction

In the ever reliable (not!) metric of comments netted on a post, my most disappointing one would have to be the tale of my truly epic road journey in Laos during the monsoon season. It’s a tale that took 2 days and involved 3 songthaews (pickup trucks with 2 rows of seating in the back), 2 buses, a boat and a collapsed bridge. It still ranks as one of the wildest travel days I have ever had!

Post I’m Most Proud Of: Vancouver Riots–The Aftermath

As bloggers, I feel like our duty is to pick up some of the slack that the mainstream media leaves off. Take, for example, the well publicized riots that followed Vancouver’s loss in the 2011 Stanley Cup. But what most news outlets won’t tell you is the truly beautiful thing that happened the morning after the riots when the entire city came together to clean up the mess. That, to me, far overshadows what happened in those riots which is why I was so very proud to tell this otherwise untold story.

As part of the 7 Links project, each blogger is supposed to tag 5 more bloggers to take part. Finding people who haven’t been tagged is a major project, so unfortunately I am only tagging four people in this process. They are:

Great roundup! This post gave me a good idea of your blog. Looking forward to more ๐Ÿ™‚

Aaron, you’ve seriously done some impressive things ๐Ÿ™‚ I like how you’ve included the post about travel not being a vacation. I couldn’t agree with you more. I often find myself more busy travelling than when I’m working a full-time job ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks Samuel! And exactly! Vacation to me is strictly for relaxing. Not for all the wonders that travel brings!
