Say What?? Travel Photo: No Entry

"Passenger No Entry"

“Passenger No Entry.” This simple phrase brings to mind something you’d see at an airport or bus station. But painted on a rock in the great outdoors? I think not!

Leave it to the English-mangling sign painters in China’s Guangxi province to put this one out there. Found along a perfectly serene hiking trail on the path that takes one up to the top of “Moon Hill,” one of many other worldy rock formations near the incredible town of Yangshuo, this sign made me stop and scratch my head. After all, a passenger is “a traveler riding in a vehicle (a boat or bus or car or plane or train etc) who is not operating it.” Considering that people walk up this trail (which mostly consisted of steps), it seems a bit out of place to me! But hey, to each his own, right?

Say What?? is a thrice weekly series featuring numerous hilarious signs from my travels. Check back every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for updates! Or better yet, subscribe to my RSS feed to receive them automatically!
