Say What?? Travel Photo: Garden

Sunset on Don Det

See this sunset? It is by far one of the most lasting images from my time at Laos‘ simply divine Si Phan Don or 4,000 Islands. From spending the day lounging around in a hammock on the Mekong River to renting a bicycle for some exploring, life at the bottom of Laos is just incredibly relaxing!

Don Khone Stream

Out of the thousands of sand bars that appear while the Mekong is lower in the Dry Season, only 3 islands are inhabited year round. I stayed on the southernmost Don Khone or Khone Island. This is a place that didn’t even have electricity till a few years ago to distract from the serene environment! But today’s Don Khone is still a remote place, with chickens wandering its dirt road.

“Say What??” isn’t just about mangled English. Sometimes, the phrasing makes perfect sense but its description doesn’t quite match the reality. Well, like this one:

Garden at Don Khone, Laos

Yes, it’s the Prasaya Xaymountry Garden. Though to me and the fellow I shared a room with, this was an empty lot, devoid of nearly all vegetation, including trees! In fact, as we first arrived on the island, we both took one look at this “garden” and said, “where is it?”

Perhaps someone whose been at Don Khone in the Rainy Season can advise if it’s perhaps a bit more garden-like then?
