Say What?? Travel Photo: Welfare

"China Welfare Lottery"

“China Welfare Lottery.” It’s a sign that can be spotted in cities throughout the “Middle Kingdon” (better known as China, though fun fact of the day…in Chinese, China is called Tsong-gwo which means “the middle kingdom.” As it was explained to me, the name was given long ago by an Emperor who thought they were in the center of the world). The image pictured above comes from my first sighting of this sign in the colurful city of Guangzhou.

But I always found this to be a curious conundrum. Sure there’s nothing wrong with the phrase, but it seems like an oxymoron to me. If you played the lottery a lot, wouldn’t you then need to be on welfare?

Say What?? is a thrice weekly series featuring numerous hilarious signs from my travels. Check back every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for updates! Or better yet, subscribe to my RSS feed to receive them automatically!
