If you ever wanted your very own space on a crowded subway train, I have two words for you. Be homeless.
Case in point: I boarded a crowded uptown 1 train on Wednesday afternoon and the crowd packed themselves in as sardines. But something odd was happening. Everyone immediately walked in and went left, leaving a wide open space to the right!
His pants were ripped in the middle of each leg, as his legs were so swollen they would not fit into his pants. A rash ran down one thigh. He wore one shoe on his swollen feet and had one bare foot (clearly, he is not the fellow in the picture).
Here we were, on a crowded subway car, quite literally packed in like sardines to the point you can’t even turn around, and nobody would get anywhere near this fellow. Not even for breathing room.
What does this say about our attitude about the less fortunate members of our society?
